The Story Behind The Song

There was a time when I knew what to say
Something witty, something pithy that would dry up your eyes
But when all was done, the pain would still stay
Although you'd pretend and I'd pretend that I'd made it alright
Now, I won't say anything more
Your head is full, your heart is so tired.
No, I'll just stay here on the floor
Holding you close just as long as you need.

You don't need a fix, you've committed no crime.
No platitudes or attitude will make it okay.
I can tell from your touch that you just need my time.
Because words, you know, they somehow just get in the way.
Now, I won't say anything more
Your head is full, your heart is so tired.
No, I'll just stay here on the floor
Holding you close just as long as you need.

No Words Back Story

Sometimes when you're talking about life's little problems with your partner, you don't want them to fix you or give you solutions or condemnations or kicks in the butt, you just want to be hugged and told that it will all be okay. Comfort food for the soul, if you will.

Also, sometimes, as songwriters, we are fortunate enough to be given a song as a gift. Nearly fully-formed. Music & lyrics together dropped into our hands and entrusted to us. This was one such song. It is, however, the first guitar solo I have ever written. It took days & I was terrified the entire time.
